Best Political Analogy Ever?

From John Dickerson of Slate:

In Memphis, Tenn., they celebrate only the thin Elvis. On clock radios, roller luggage, and dinner plates, he swivels his narrow hips everywhere. The fat Elvis of the 1970s is almost impossible to find, even in ads for weight loss and drug rehab centers. Last weekend, the 2,000 Republican activists meeting in Memphis looked past the bloated big-government conservatism of George W. Bush and focused on their own young Elvis, Ronald Reagan.

no, silly analogy, because Reagan was actually fatter... he just didn't have a failing war going on at the same time as his bloat.

CGI, if, by actually fatter, you mean actually fatter than Bush, I have to disagree with you. According to this Cato Institute bulletin, discretionary spending rose at an annualized rate of 8% under Bush and only 1.9% under Reagan.

You have a point that Reagan ran up some huge deficits, though, so maybe a more apt analogy would be:

Goldwater: young Elvis
Reagan: fat Elvis
Bush: dying-on-the-toilet Elvis
